The January transfer window in now closed so it’s time to look at those deals that didn’t get over the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, the race for Stefan de Vrij hots-up…
Premier League trio Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are all plotting swoops for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij this summer, according to a report by TeamTalk.
De Vrij has developed in to one of the best centre-backs in Serie A since joining Lazio from Feyenoord in 2014 while he’s also established himself as a key part of the Dutch national team.
However, the 26-year-old’s future at the Stadio Olimpico is in serious doubt as his contract is about to expire in June and he’s free to discuss joining a foreign club on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Lazio have been in talks with the defenders representatives for some time about a new deal and TeamTalk claim the Italian club are confident he will sign an extension.
However, the report says de Vrij’s camp are pushing to have a £20m release clause included in the contract which will allow him to make a move at a reasonable price this summer.
TeamTalk cite a report from the Daily Star that claims Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool are all plotting moves to sign de Vrij and the defender is believed to be keen on playing in the Premier League.
The report says that although the English trio would ideally like to sign de Vrij on a free, they are aware he’s likely to sign a new deal at Lazio but a £20m fee would still be regarded as a great deal for a player of his quality.
Liverpool have long been linked with de Vrij and it seems they are ready to renew their interest this summer despite splashing out £75m on Virgil van Dijk last month.
United are expected to strengthen their squad at the end of the season with Jose Mourinho eyeing a reliable long-term partner for Eric Bailly while Chelsea could be in the market for a centre-back to replace the out-of-favour David Luiz.
