Gossip: Lewandowski to Chelsea, Man United, City or Reds

LEWANDOWSKI IN DEMAND

Congratulations to The Sun’s Neil Ashton, who writes an ‘exclusive’ story telling us that Robert Lewandowski has ‘itchy feet’ at Bayern Munich, without mentioning the club surely most likely to buy him – Real Madrid. It has long been known that the Pole wants to leave the German giants at the end of the season and is seeking a new challenge; it has long been known that his likeliest suitors are Real Madrid.

But Ashton takes a different tack, claiming that Lewandowski mostly fancies English football. He then writes that Chelsea ‘inevitably will be the front-runners’ but then also makes a case for him joining Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool. If the point of leaving Bayern is to win the Champions League, we suspect that he will probably want to join a club who has recently won the Champions League.

SERI IN DEMAND TOO
Excuse us staying with The Sun but they are just about the only people churning out nonsense in February when everybody else is busy watching and enjoying the football. They claim that ‘Manchester United transfer plans could be scuppered as Liverpool and Arsenal join the race for Nice star Jean Michael Seri’.

With a price tag of around £35m, we suspect there will be many clubs interested in Seri, who is seen as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick at United. Do we really think that he would choose Arsenal instead of United? Their need may be greater but Seri – desperate for a move to the Premier League – would be unlikely to choose Europa League football over the prospect of Champions League football and title challenges.

SPURS GO FOR BROOKS
‘TOTTENHAM want to turn young Sheffield United striker David Brooks into the new Harry Kane,’ claims The Sun. Apparently, the young Welsh international is seen as a ‘long-term replacement’ for Kane, which sounds more than a little optimistic for a player who a) is not really a striker and b) has scored two Championship goals. The price mentioned is £10m.

Now Brooks may well – at 20 – fit the profile of a likely Tottenham signing, but calling him ‘the new Harry Kane’ is less than helpful. Try Dele Alli; the cap fits a little better.
